Lima

Lima was founded in 1532 by Francisco Pizarro. Today, with a population of over 7.5 million people, Lima is a busy metropolis with a mix of colonial mansions and modern buildings; art-galleries and baroque churches; deluxe and fast-food restaurants; beautiful parks, bohemian bars and discotheques.

Folklore shows in Lima start late at evening, however certain hotels offer dinner – shows at reasonable hours. Some hotels house casinos and slot machine houses are everywhere. The districts of Miraflores and Barranco offer entertainment for night owls. Lima, as any cosmopolitan city, offers o wide range of restaurants and a variety of cuisines. Some of the typical Peruvian dishes from this City are: the "ceviche" (fish marinated in lemon); the "ají de gallina" chicken stew in a hot cream sauce); "anticuchos"' (brochette of beef-heart).

Lima is the gateway for international and domestic flights; located in the central coastal area its temperate weather all year round. Summer: from December to March with temperatures between 24°/26°C (78°/80°F) with scarce rain and high humidity. Winter: from June to September with an average temperature of 14°/18º C (55º /65º F) foggy and humid.

CITY TOUR : 3 hours sightseeing tour of Colonial and Modern Lima passing by outstanding monuments such as the Government Palace, the City Hall and the Cathedral at the Plaza Mayor. Visit the 17th century San Francisco Convent. Before returning to the hotel, short tour of the modern districts of San Isidro and Miraflores where there is a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. GOLD MUSEUM : Visit the world famous private collection of pre-lnca and Inca gold art. The museum of Miguel Mujica Gallo also houses a collection of antique weapons from 15th to 19th centuries and fine pre-Columbian textiles.

LARCO HERRERA MUSEUM : Since 1926 the world's largest private collection of pre-Columbian art with a unique assortment of erotic pottery, genuine and rich Jewels in gold, silver and semi-precious stones- The museum holds 45,000 pieces of ceramics plus genuine mummies and marvelous Paracas textiles, Daily (Sunday and holidays only in the mornings)

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGY : This well laid-out museum features magnificent collections of Chavin, Nazca, Mochicas and Chimu cultures: pottery and textiles are well displayed and explained giving a good idea of pre-lnca civilizations. Open daily except Monday

PACHACAMAC RUINS : 30 km. /19 miles south of Lima overlooking the Pacific Ocean, This temple dedicated to Pachacamac "the God, Creator of the World" was one of the most important religious centers for pilgrimage during pre-Inca and Inca times. Daily except Monday

AMANO MUSEUM : Houses a unique collection of cotton textiles, mainly from the coastal Chancay Valley, north of Lima. Visitors may learn about a variety of weaving techniques developed by ancient Peruvians. Daily by appointment only

NATIONAL MUSEUM : Large and modern building which houses different art exhibitions. On display also ore some replicas of such important remains as the "Estela de Raymondi" found in Chavin de Huantar and models of sites such as Machu Picchu.

ROSA NAUTICA : The Rosa Nautica is a Victorian style restaurant located in a pier right at the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Ideal for dinner, although is also open for lunch, fish and seafood specialties. Open daily.

SEÑORIO DE SULCO: Located in Miraflores near the sea cliffs with an excellent ocean view, specialty of the house is the Huatia Sulcana, sort of stew cooked with more than 30 different herbs (pre Columbian recipe). Open daily for lunch and dinner.

HOW TO GET THERE

By road: Lima is the center of the Pan-American Highway network which links all the cities of the Peru as well as to the Countries of Ecuador, Bolivia Chile.

Bus service is good with new vehicles and covered by a obligatory insurance service. Each bus company has its own terrestrial terminal.

By air : Lima is the gateway to Peru and is linked to the rest of the world through the international airport Jorge Chavez where arrives and departs daily flights with frequent itineraries to all the departments of the Peru.
