Horseback Riding in
the high plains of the Andes 3D/2N
Description
On horseback we survey the rugged tablelands
of southern Peru. In this charming hacienda we
acquaint ourselves with the local people and
customs. We have the opportunity to explore the
caverns, springs, canyons, and misty mountains
of the headwaters of the Apurimac River, which
runs north past Cusco to become the longest and
most voluminous river in the world. Interlaced
with the headwaters of the Apurimac River are
many high lakes and meandering streams, divulged
by deep caverns at the canyon heads. The amazing
scenery, natural landscaping, and quaint
environment make this horseback riding adventure
absolutely astounding. Note: You have the option
of ending this adventure in Arequipa or in Cusco.

Day 1
At 6:00 AM we leave by bus from Cusco for
Espinar (Yauri), ascending the Vilcanota River,
the river which defines the Sacred Valley and
passes Machu Picchu. We will stop for breakfast
in Urcos. Once we arrive at Sicuani, we ascend a
tributary of the Vilcanota to its source in Lake
Langui Layo. We ascend to the west and cross the
waters' divide into the headwaters of the
Apurimac. Our trip lasts approximately 5 hours
and covers 220 kilometres. We saddle the horses
to ride to the Hacienda Puente Central where we
rest for the evening.
Day 2
In the morning we climb the valley of the
Apurimac River until we arrive at Tres Caones,
where during lunch we admire the beautiful
landscape. The return is approximately 3 hours
to the hacienda and we arrive in time for a
special dinner of typical foods and a
traditional dancing show.
Day 3
In the morning we visit lovely sites near
the hacienda, climbing to the tops of nearby
hills and galloping freely. We return for a late
barbecue lunch and then board the bus for a 5-hour
trip returning to Cusco. We arrive at 9:00 in
the evening, with time to shower and refresh
before Cusco's nightlife begins.
